When it comes to furnishing and decorating homes, it’s easy to get caught up in trends or that one statement piece you just have to have. But sometimes the details that really make a home feel comfortable and pulled together come down to balance, proportion, and function.
In a recent Houzz article, “7 Common Decorating Mistakes to Avoid” by Georgia Madden, design experts shared some of the missteps they often see when styling a living room — and how to fix them. A JDB project, North Seattle Whole Home and Bump-out Addition, is featured in this article, noting a simple detail that makes a big difference:
Hanging Artwork Too High.
To quote the article, “ ‘Artwork is often hung too high to be properly seen or appreciated,’ says Frances Cosway, principal designer at White Pebble Interiors. ‘Gallery style is the only hanging style that allows for artwork to be hung higher than eye height as it combines artworks of different sizes to create a wall of art.’ “
A Simple Fix: Cosway suggests hanging art so that the center of the piece is at eye height, about 63 inches from the floor. This tends to be the most comfortable viewing height. If you’re working with a gallery wall, think of the collection as one piece and find the visual center to guide placement. A small adjustment can completely change how your space feels.
